The start of March brings Multicultural Awareness Week to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campus.
The campus community is invited to take part in this national annual observance, which provides opportunities for all students, faculty and staff to reflect upon the experiences of multiracial students.
UWO’s Division of Academic Support of Inclusive Excellence host a variety of events that explore different aspects of the multiracial student experience:

Jaclyn Skalnik, the founder of Adoption Wellness LLC, is a trauma-informed, adoption competent social worker and psychotherapist. Her areas of expertise include attachment, grief and loss, whole-self identity exploration, transracial adoption and developmental trauma. As a public speaker, Skalnik has presented at national and international conferences on adoption and child welfare issues and has trained professionals in schools, the legal sector and the medical field. As a transracially adopted individual, she weaves her personal experiences into her professional training to provide a comprehensive perspective on the complexities of adoption.

Chris Singleton

Chris Singleton is a former professional baseball player in the Chicago Cubs organization as well as an inspirational speaker who has traveled the country passionately speaking to over 60,000 students. His mother, Sharonda Coleman Singleton, was murdered along with eight other victims at Mother Emanuel AME church in Downtown Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17, 2015 by a white male who wanted to start a race related war in the United States. Singleton inspired his city and the nation by forgiving the man who murdered his mother and stating that “Love is stronger than hate.” Watch a sample of Chris’ lectures here!

Two virtual book discussions for The Vanishing Half are set for March 5 at 9 a.m. and March 19 at 9 a.m. Registered participants (registration has closed) should read the first half of the book for the discussion on March 5 and the second half of the book for the discussion on the March 19.
