Everyone has a role in ensuring quality education

April 4, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

free

Join us on Tuesday, April 4 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for Equity in Education presented by Cheryl Brown Henderson in Clow L104. Brown Henderson is one of three daughters of the late Rev. Oliver L. Brown who, along with 12 other parents in the fall 1950 led by attorneys for the NAACP, filed suit on
behalf of their children against the local board of education. Their case joined with cases from Delaware, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C., on appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, and on May 17, 1954 became known as the landmark decision Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka.

Today, Brown Henderson is founding president of the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research and owner of Brown & Associates, an educational consulting firm. She has an extensive background in education, business and civic leadership, political advocacy, public policy implementation and federal legislative development.

Topics covered in the Equity in Education presentation:

Everyone has a role in ensuring quality education. The achievement gap is real between African American students and white students in our public schools.

Integration in public schools has never been achieved. Brown v. Brown resonates every time a person of color checks into a hotel or is served in a restaurant, but the Brown decision does not resonate as loudly now in public education, where it was intended to have the greatest impact.
