Poverty is a justice and sustainability issue. It impedes access to social, environmental, and economic resources and opportunities. The purpose of this exercise is to inspire empathy and critical thinking in response to these issues in our communities. It will provide participants an opportunity to encounter some of the challenges that those with limited incomes must face on a daily basis. They will be asked to make choices about mental, physical, and emotional well being; family relationships and childrearing; food security; legal problems; risky behaviors and risk avoidance; political and religious beliefs, and a myriad of other concerns. Participants will have a chance to examine how poverty affects decision making, investigate how their ideals might match up, and communicate about creative solutions. We believe events like these can have a powerful effect on our campus and in the city of Oshkosh. We hope to foster diversity and inclusion, challenge perceptions, and strengthen community.
