Refugee Simulation Workshop
April 17 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pmFree
5th Annual HSL Department Community Collaboration
At a time when our nation is very polarized on the issue of refugees and immigrants, UW Oshkosh Human Services Leadership Department presents a Refugee Simulation Workshop. This professional development opportunity is designed to help participants increase their cultural competence and discover ways in which to understand refugee and immigrant populations. Learning cultural competence creates breaks through our conditioned response of what we think we know and creates an opportunity for a shared understanding of the values, believes and behaviors of others.
HOW IT WORKS
Participants are grouped into refugee families and are lead through a guided exercise of 12 to 14 stations representing the real-life dilemmas and timeline that many refugees face. Afterward, participants have time to reflect as a group about the experience. Participants will leave with tangible ways to help engage, support and empathize with refugees as they become integrated into our local communities and campus.
