Thiermann is the son of activists who exposed him early to the value of civic engagement. As a surfer, he was in a social circle with lots of young people who were not engaged in social or environmental issues, nor inclined to watch long documentaries. He knew they were nonetheless caring people and that if engaged effectively and given clear direction, they could be a tremendous force for change.
