Do-It-Yourself Photo Tips

Here are tips and best practices to obtain the photos you need.

  • Any phone camera will do.
    • Designate a photographer. Make sure to have the phone charged and ready with the camera app open.
  • Consider the subject matter and purpose of what you are trying to capture.
    • Determine the purpose of the photos. What is the most important thing to capture?
  • Get close to your subject(s).
    • You want to be able to recognize faces or objects.
    • Avoid zooming in which will negatively affect the quality of your photo.
  • Point-of-view
    • Shoot both vertical and horizontal pictures. This will give you variety for multiple uses (print, web, etc.).
    • Choose different angles to shoot.
    • Switch up how you are framing the photo.
  • Take a lot of photos.
    • You can always delete images you don’t want but you can’t retake those you haven’t taken.
  • Consider the lighting.
    • Look for natural light. If inside, try to find windows offering natural light
    • Set subjects purposely in the direct light falling onto their face.
  • Things to avoid.
    • Backlighting (windows or projection screens behind the subject matter)
    • Visual distractions and clutter (avoid people in motion, trash bins in view, busy background, etc.)
  • Capturing a group photo.
    • Organize the group before taking the photo.
    • Line up individuals by height with those tallest at the center.
    • If the group is more than five people, consider making two rows or more.
    • The front row may kneel (or sit) to ensure all faces can be seen.
    • Try to get as close (cropped in) to the group as possible leaving minimal background.
    • Give the group a countdown and snap several photos (just in case someone blinks).
  • Event photography
    • Capture engagement in the room
    • Audiences tend to engaged at the beginning of a presentation. That is the best time to try and shoot.
    • Capture candid moments during the presentation.
    • Find an angle emphasizing the full seats and de-emphasizing the empty ones.
