Ashley Lamers

Professional Counselor
UWO ’12 Women’s Studies major
UWO ’18 MSE in Professional Counseling, Clinical Mental Health emphasis

What do you do during a typical day at work?
The biggest part of my typical work day is holding counseling sessions with clients. I work with clients to address symptoms and root causes of anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, traumatic stress disorders, and concerns about sexuality, identity, impulsivity, and relationships. In addition to counseling, my average work day includes writing case notes, completing administrative tasks (e.g. phone calls, scheduling, billing, and accounting), and miscellaneous tasks (e.g. cleaning and stocking).

Why did you choose UWO?
I chose UWO primarily because of location, reputation, and tuition cost. I lucked out that UWO has such incredible WAGS and ProCo departments.

How has Women’s and Gender Studies influenced your career path?
I think the WAGS program set me up well to understand the influence of systems of oppression, intersectionality, and individuality, all of which deeply impact mental health. WAGS has also instilled a recognition and appreciation for the real lived experiences of marginalized peoples in different cultural pockets of the world. Working in a rural community, I am keenly aware of the challenges for some people to access mental healthcare at all due to cultural stigmas, geographical location, and financial restraints.

Do you have any advice you’d like to share with current students?
Balance and listen to the collective wisdom of your head, heart, courage, and ability. You may need to pave your own path or take one already laid out, but wherever you go in the world and in your career, may you be true to yourself and share your unique truth and voice everywhere you stop along the way.
