Dear University community,

There was an incident involving shots fired that occurred in the City of Oshkosh on Saturday, April 13, 2024, around 9:39pm. The incident took place several blocks off campus. The City of Oshkosh Police Department is responsible for the investigation. The suspect was arrested about a half hour into the investigation. No one was injured, and there was no reported property damage.

Our department has received a few questions and read a few conversations on social media about the role and the application of UWO TitanAlert text and email notifications in situations like Saturday night’s. TitanAlerts are used to inform and direct UWO community members regarding situations that take place on the UWO campus so they can make decisions about their personal safety and, as needed, take shelter in the event of oncoming dangers and ongoing threats.

On Saturday, both the UWO Police Department and the City of Oshkosh Police Department had personnel in the incident’s area when calls came in. Law enforcement personnel were able to saturate the area almost immediately, and that helped officers quickly assess if there was any immediate ongoing danger and the suspect was apprehended. We always evaluate our Titan Alert practices following situations that occur on and near our campus. We will use information we have gathered regarding this specific incident to evaluate our future communications.
