Safety assessment of teaching laboratories at UWO-Fox Cities Campus

Items from the Chair (Matson): Biosafety Levels of HS 163 and 169

Changes to Halsey Science Center Room 169 – Locks on the –80 Freezers

Room 169 is used for storage only and contains a number of -80C freezers. They have now all been locked with a keyed lock or combination padlock. However, the door to this room must remain open with fans running or the compressors to multiple freezer and refrigeration units will overheat.

Halsey Science Center Room 163

Room 163 is not used for much laboratory research, but it has an ultracentrifuge and a gel documentation station that is frequently used to monitor and record results of experiments involving recombinant DNA (PCR products, plasmid preparations, and the like). The safety equipment in 163 is limited, but the room does have a fume hood and it is locked via a keypad entry.

Halsey room 169 and 163 designate to BSL-2?

This might necessitate a walk-through with another committee member (possibly our BSO) and the production of door tags indicating their level 2 Safety designation along with entry requirements.
