Proposal for MSW language

b. GRADUATE. To be eligible for graduation with an MSW degree, students must fulfill the following expectations:
1. Meet remaining course requirements beyond those required for initial admission;
2. maintain a 3.0 CGPA in all courses taken toward MSW degree;
3. earn a B or above in every required course and MSW elective;
4. successful completion of the field practicum(s); and
5. submission of MSW application to candidacy.
Students who are unable to earn a B or above in any MSW course will need to meet with the Admission and Continuation committee to demonstrate that exceptional circumstances prevented them from meeting this standard and, if relevant, develop a remediation plan to ensure acceptable performance in retaking the course.”

2. maintain a B average in coursework counting toward the MSW degree.
3. earn a B or above in all field and seminar courses

Alternative change –

2. maintain a B average in coursework counting toward the MSW degree.
3. earn a B or above in all field and seminar and practice courses

Rationale

1. It will allow greater flexibility in grading for instructors. For example, a student who is learning the material and working hard but not particularly strong in a subject could earn a C+. The professor would not need to assign a grade (e.g. a B) equal to a solid, but not excellent performance by another student). It allows greater differentiation among acceptable performing students.
2. We should implement whatever is in the by-laws. Some faculty have already assigned Cs and those students still graduated without retaking the course. If we fully implement the policy as it is, not allowing anyone with a C to graduate we will be setting up a discrepancy between student experiences past and present without officially changing the by-laws.
3. The rule change will in no way inhibit the grading of professors who prefer to maintain all grades in the A – B range.
