The University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac held its annual spring Honors and Commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, in the Prairie Theater, 400 University Dr., Fond du Lac.

Fond du Lac County Executive Allen Buechel was the Commencement speaker.

He has served as County Executive since 1993 after serving on the Fond du Lac County Board for 17 years. Under his leadership, Fond du Lac County piloted a long-term care program for the elderly and disabled, now being implemented state-wide. Fond du Lac County also built a new university center at UW-Fond du Lac, as well as renovated all of the existing buildings. He was awarded UW-Fond du Lac’s 2014 Spirit of Excellence Award for his support of education in the community.

Patrick Schwoerer of Fond du Lac was selected to be the student speaker. He plans to major in elementary education with a minor in coaching and will be transferring to Marian University in the fall. While at UW-Fond du Lac, Schwoerer has served as Student Government Association (SGA) president, Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee (SUFAC) chair and has been a member of other campus committees. He is also the head tennis coach and active as a student athlete. In the community, Schwoerer was recognized as student of the month by the Fond du Lac Morning Rotary Club. He also gives back to the community by donating produce from his family garden to local food pantries.

The Student Choice Teaching Excellence award was presented to Richard Klein, communications and theater arts instructor, during the ceremony.

Graduates at the spring Commencement ceremony were awarded the Associate of Arts and Science Degree. A reception for graduates and their families was held in the University Center Commons following the ceremony.
