Joan Roy (left) has been appointed director of the University Children’s Center (UCC) at the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley, a UW Oshkosh campus. Roy, a preschool teacher at UCC since 1999, began her new role in September following the retirement of colleague and longtime Director Wendy Eagon (right).

“I am very honored and excited to begin this new journey,” Roy said. “I have had the pleasure of teaching in the preschool at University Children’s Center for 19 years; this gives me an advantage of already knowing all the extraordinary staff that work there, along with their unique strengths. I have the support of the staff and families, and will continue to dedicate my life to the children we serve and the university.”

Roy earned an associate of arts and sciences degree from UW-Fox Valley, and completed a bachelor of science degree in child and family studies at UW-Madison.

Roy’s experience will ensure educational and childcare experiences continue smoothly, while also working toward goals of updating and refreshing the building interior and enhancing the playground with additional outdoor activities. Preschool children this fall will be introduced to the Kindness Curriculum, which links kindness and compassion with mental health and was created from research at the Center for Healthy Minds at UW-Madison.

“The Search and Screen Committee was impressed by the high level of professionalism, experience, and passion for children and families that Joan brings,” said Regional Associate Dean of Administration and Finance Bethany Rusch. “Joan is a veteran preschool teacher with the UCC. She brings a wealth of experience as not only an early childhood educator, but as a child care center director prior to joining UW-Fox Valley.”  

The University Children’s Center has received the top YoungStar five-star rating from the State of Wisconsin Department of Children and Families every year in the certification program’s six year history.
