James Irvie Hoffman III, 77, died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack on May 16.

At the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Hoffman served as a geology professor, department chair and eventually College of Letters and Science dean.

According to Hoffman’s obituary, there are no immediate plans for a service. Donations in Hoffman’s name should be directed to the Spokane Scholars Foundation, PO Box 1278, Spokane, WA, 99210.
