The College Sports Information Directors of America named UW-Oshkosh senior Sydney Thompson to its 2021 NCAA Division III Academic All-America® Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Teams.

Thompson, a First Team selection, was among 46 Division III student-athletes recognized for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom during the 2020-21 academic year.

CoSIDA members voted 16 student-athletes to its Academic All-America® First Team and 15 to both its Second and Third squads. Katie Bacher of Massachusetts Institute of Technology was selected as the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team Member of the Year.

Thompson, a two-year participant for the UW-Oshkosh track & field team, graduated in May with a 3.915 cumulative grade-point average. The finance major transferred to UW-Oshkosh from Division II Minnesota State University, Mankato following the 2018-19 academic year. She is employed as a para-planner for Mersberger Financial Group, Inc. in Sheboygan Falls.

Last month Thompson was chosen as the Division III Women’s Outdoor Track & Field National Scholar Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The USTFCCCA also selected Thompson as its Co-Field Performer of the Meet at the Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship held May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C.

Thompson threw to victories in both the discus and shot put competitions at the national championship while finishing ninth in the hammer throw. She was seeded third in the discus and won the event with a season-best measurement of 153-4. Thompson entered the shot put activity as the top seed and won the event with a season-best distance of 49-11 3/4. She finished ninth in the hammer throw with a measurement of 165-3.

Thompson was also named Field Performer of the Meet at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship held May 7-8 in River Falls. She took first place in both the discus (153-0) and shot put (48-10 3/4) events at the meet while finishing fifth in the hammer throw (165-8).

Thompson, a 2017 Mercer High School graduate, was an indoor track & field letterwinner for the Titans in 2020 and 2021 and an outdoor track & field letterwinner in 2021. She was a fifth-place finisher in the shot put (43-5) at the 2020 WIAC Indoor Track & Field Championship.

Thompson’s two seasons at Minnesota State University, Mankato featured third-place finishes in both the discus and shot put events at the 2018 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

This past indoor season Thompson ranked second nationally in the shot put (46-3 1/4) and sixth in the 20-pound weight throw (55-5 1/2).

Thompson, a first-time Academic All-America® honoree, was named the 2021 winner of the UW-Oshkosh Phyllis Roney Senior Coaches Award. She was a member of the UW-Oshkosh Dean’s List four times and the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll twice.

Last month Thompson was one of 12 student-athletes chosen to the 2021 CoSIDA NCAA Division III Academic All-District® 6 Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team. She was the lone WIAC student-athlete to receive a Division III Academic All-America® Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country award.

Since the inception of the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Program in 1952, 58 UW-Oshkosh student-athletes have combined for 81 Academic All-America® awards.
