The Masque of the Red Death: The Musical

Abstract
I received a Student/Faculty Collaborative Research Grant to compose a short musical. For this project, I adapted the short story The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, created a libretto and then composed a musical. The musical includes 8 songs – 3 ensemble numbers, 2 songs for solo voice and accompaniment, and 3 instrumental songs. It features 2 named character roles, 6 smaller group solos, a handful of solo lines for individual singers, as well as a rhythm section, string section, and wind instrumental accompaniment. In my presentation, I will present one of the songs. I will discuss the process of adapting the prose text into lyrics appropriate for music, how I set the lyrics, and how I composed the accompanying music. The presentation will culminate with a recording of a recent performance of the musical.
