UW System Horizontal Mentoring Program

Peer Mentoring for Senior Women Faculty

In September 2011, the Women and Science Program was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation’s ADVANCE: Increasing the Participation and Advancement of Women in Academic Science and Engineering CareersThis grant is being used to create horizontal mentoring groups for senior women faculty in STEM fields at the 11 comprehensive universities in the UW System (Eau Claire, Green Bay, La Crosse, Oshkosh, Parkside, Platteville, Stevens Point, Stout, Superior and Whitewater).

During the Fall 2011 semester, women at associate and full professor ranks who lack female mentors or peers in their own departments were invited to form a mentoring group with disciplinary colleagues on the other campuses. The first gathering was at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells on May 17-18, 2012. Participants shared information, planned future collaboration and participated in two COACh workshops facilitated by Dr. Jane Tucker, “Effective Negotiating Techniques” and “Balancing Your Career Portfolio”.

In 2013, the disciplinary groups chose their own meeting dates and locations.

The next group gathering was at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells on June 3-4, 2014. Barbara Butterfield presented a COACh workshop, “Academic Leadership: Uses of Influence, Power and Conflict Resolution” designed for participants who are chairs, PIs or administrators, or who are considering taking on an academic leadership position.
