The Earth Charter Community Summit celebrates the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s commitment to the Earth Charter, which counted the University among the earliest signers in the USA.  Read the Earth Charter itself and read the history of Earth Charter: https://earthcharter.org/about-the-earth-charter/history/ 

We are proud to announce that the 2018 Earth Charter Community Summit Keynote Speaker will be Kimberly Wasserman, the 2013 Goldman Environmental Prize winner for North America and director of LVEJO, the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization. Mark your calendars for her keynote address, “The Fight for Environmental Justice,” at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9th, in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Alumni Welcome and Conference Center ballroom.  Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the talk is free; please bring an ID for admission.

Below is the complete list of events for the 2018 Earth Charter Community Summit. Most are free and open to the public, but please note that some are closed events. We hope to see you at as many events as you can join!

 

WISCONSIN SOLAR TOUR

10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Join us as we kick off 2018’s Earth Charter celebrations with a tour of Sage Hall’s many sustainable design features! Free and open to the public.

Tours will be about 30 minutes long, and guided by either Dr. Kevin Crawford, director of the Sustainability Institute for Regional Transformations or Brian Kermath, UWO’s director of sustainability.

CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY TOUR

This is a closed event for invited students.

Brian Kermath, UWO’s Director of Sustainability, will guide students on a tour of the Oshkosh campus’ sustainable design features.

STUDENT WORKSHOP WITH KIM WASSERMAN

This is a closed event for invited students.

Kim Wasserman, executive director of LVEJO, will meet with a group of UWO students to discuss and build understanding of environmental justice.

To hear Kim discuss similar topics, please come to her keynote lecture later in the day!

FOOD JUSTICE WORKSHOP

This is a closed event for invited community stakeholders.

Kim Wasserman will facilitate a collaborative meeting between several local non-profits. The group will be addressing issues related to food access, poverty, environmental and social and racial justice.

Be on the lookout for a report on workshop outcomes in the future!

WHAT IS EARTH CHARTER?

Come learn from Dr. Jim Feldman about a seminal movement in global sustainability. The Earth Charter Initiative is a global movement of organizations and individuals that work to guide a transition towards a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world.

 

RECLAIMING THE WI IDEA

4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Join our panel of knowledgeable faculty for an exploration of the Wisconsin Idea. With representative from several academic departments, the discussion will be broad, accessible and dynamic!

 Dr. Peter Meyerson will facilitate.

EDIBLE CAMPUS TOUR

9:10 a.m. to 11:10 a.m.

Join the Sustainability Institute for Regional Transformation (SIRT), on a delicious tour of the UW Oshkosh campus to close out 2018’s Earth Charter events.

The tour will be led by Drs. Kevin Crawford and Elizabeth Barron, SIRT’s director and associate director, respectively.

This event is free and open to the public. Bring your appetite!

 

COMMUNITY GARDEN CLEAN-UP AND DINNER

This is a closed event for invited community members.

Partnering with ADVOCAP, SIRT will lead a community garden clean-up. Community garden members, SIRT and ADVOCAP staff will work together to get the garden beds and overall area ready for winter. Afterward, participants will share dinner, sponsored by ADVOCAP.
