Media Certificates

Build Career Skills with Media Certificates

Our certificates are available to all students on the UWO Oshkosh campus. Students looking to enhance their media skills to complement their existing major are encouraged to explore one or more of our four media certificates.

If you are a Radio TV Film (RTF) major, you can also complete one or more of these certificates, but they will not satisfy the RTF major requirement of completing two certificates or a minor from another department. If you are an RTF major looking for information about certificates to meet these requirements, please see the Advising page.

What’s a certificate and why should I consider completing one?

Certificates are like mini-minors.  There are many reasons to complete a certificate, including:

  • Learning additional skills that will make you a stronger candidate on the job market.
  • A certificate is an official credential that signals your knowledge and skills in a particular area.
  • Certificates show up on your transcript just like a major or minor.
  • You can list a certificate on your resume, which can help you stand out compared to others.
  • Certificates allow you to explore topics you’re passionate about.
  • Most students need to complete elective courses in order to graduate. Use those elective hours to earn a credential!
  • Certificates allow you to explore. It you aren’t sure is a major or minor is for you, consider sampling it through a certificate. You might end up deciding to major or minor but, if you don’t, you still walk away with a certificate.
Sports Media Certificate

Have you ever been watching a game and thought “How do I get that job?” Maybe you’ve found yourself talking back to sports analysts, listing stats and trying to counter their arguments. When they show the production truck and camera operators during the game, do you wish you could be part of the action? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we created the Sports Media Certificate for people just like you. Students pursuing this certificate have the opportunity to be involved in the broadcast and streaming of Titan Athletics events through Titan TV and WRST 90.3-FM. Join us and learn how to create content rooted in your passion for sports.

Media Literacy Certificate

Why do scriptwriters create characters and stories the way they do? What can TV shows, movies, advertising messages, and other media tell us about our society and values?  The Media Literacy certificate provides an opportunity for students to develop skills for critically analyzing media messages, as well as to create media content. By blending critical analysis and media production, students develop varied media literacy techniques and knowledge that are informed through study and practice.
